2022 DESIGN CHALLENGES

The Design Challenges are a huge part of the SK Theatre Design Festival. This year's festival is taking place from April 29 – May 15th, 2022. The festival will take place as a hybrid event in both Saskatoon and Regina featuring the work of theatre designers across the province as well as seminars, artists talks and open and closing social events.

These design challenges will be on display in Saskatoon from April 29-May 5 at the Midtown Plaza, and in Regina from May 14-15 in the lobby of Darke Hall.

Selected designers were asked to submit in the ares of set, props, costumes, sound.

SET DESIGN CHALLENGE

Designers each built a ½” scale model or a digital 3D rendering.

Theme: Memory.  All too often we are challenged with plays that go back in time.  What do you create when there is a flashback? What if the whole play is a memory and only the last few minutes are in the current moment?  Memory is a powerful emotional state and can be visualized in so many ways.  We are curious to see how you envision a scenographic environment that evokes memory.

Honorarium: $600

Number of applications accepted: 4 (2 emerging artists, 2 professional artists).  Please note that if there are not enough entries in both categories there will still be a total of four artists selected.

COSTUME DESIGN CHALLENGE

Designers each drew and built a costume.  Build requirements were either the full costume for 24” doll (or approx. in size) or a section of the design such as a shirt or the detailed sections of the design.

Theme: Sustainability.  All elements must be made from recycled materials.  Item(s) must be built well enough to be transported and displayed.

Honorarium: $600

Number of applications accepted: 4 (2 emerging artists, 2 professional artists).  Please note that if there are not enough entries in both categories there will still be a total of four artists selected.

PROPS DESIGN CHALLENGE

Designers each designed and built a prop.

Theme: ‘Tricks’. Props can add so much to a production, but they can also be the secret to how tricks happen on stage. Think Mary Poppins magically bag or an flowering plant.  All those things that make the audience say ‘wow, how did they do that – it must be magic’ Yes theatre magic!

Honorarium: $600

Number of applications accepted: Four (2 emerging artists, 2 professional artists).  Please note that if there are not enough entries in both categories there will still be a total of four artists selected.

SOUND DESIGN CHALLENGE

Designers each designed and programed a soundscape that tells a story or presents an experience to the audience.

Theme: Underdark – Imagine what the world looks like underground.  Who lives there? Is there light?  What lurks in the shadows?  Show us the world and how light enters this new underworld from the strangest of places.

Location: Regina only

Note there will be a presentation in Saskatoon (April 29 – May 1) of ‘The Tales of Good and Evil’ from 2021 that was never able to be presented due to Covid-19 restrictions.

Honorarium: $600

Number of applications accepted: Two (1 emerging artist, 1 professional artist).  Please note that if there are not enough entries in both categories there will still be a total of two artists selected.   Also note that artists based in Regina will have priority.  If you are a Saskatoon based artist, you will need to cover your own accommodations in Regina.
