2022 Design Challenges
The SK Theatre Design Festival is planning the second annual festival April 29 – May 15th, 2022. The festival will take place as a hybrid event in both Saskatoon and Regina featuring the work of theatre designers across the province as well as seminars, artists talks and open and closing social events. Exact locations for gallery space TBD.

This year the festival committee decided to offer artists the opportunity to participate. Designers were asked to submit in the ares of set, props, costumes, sound and lighting.

THE CHOSEN DESIGNERS WILL NEED TO COMPLETE THE DESIGN TERMS AS LISTED BELOW.

SET DESIGNER
Design Requirements: build a ½” scale model or a digital 3D rendering. The artist will be responsible for all the costs incurred in the creation of the design. Please contact the committee for details if you are creating a digital 3D model.
Theme: Memory. All too often we are challenged with plays that go back in time. What do you create when there is a flashback? What if the whole play is a memory and only the last few minutes are in the current moment? Memory is a powerful emotional state and can be visualized in so many ways. We are curious to see how you envision a scenographic environment that evokes memory.
Final Design due: April 20th

Honorarium: $600
Number of applications accepted: 4 (2 emerging artists, 2 professional artists). Please note that if there are not enough entries in both categories there will still be a total of four artists selected.
COSTUME DESIGNER
Design Requirements: Draw and build a costume. Build requirements are either the full costume for 24” doll (or approx. in size) or a section of the design such as a shirt or the detailed sections of the design. The artist will be responsible for all the costs incurred in the creation of the design.
Theme: Sustainability. All elements must be made from recycled materials. Item(s) must be built well enough to be transported and displayed.
Final Design due: April 20th

Honorarium: $600
Number of applications accepted: 4 (2 emerging artists, 2 professional artists). Please note that if there are not enough entries in both categories there will still be a total of four artists selected.
PROPS DESIGNER
Design Requirements: Design and build a prop.
Theme: ‘Tricks’. Props can add so much to a production, but they can also be the secret to how tricks happen on stage. Think Mary Poppins magically bag or an flowering plant. All those things that make the audience say ‘wow, how did they do that – it must be magic’ Yes theatre magic!
Final Design due: April 20th

Number of applications accepted: Four (2 emerging artists, 2 professional artists). Please note that if there are not enough entries in both categories there will still be a total of four artists selected.
LIGHTING DESIGNER
Design Requirements: Design, hang, focus and program a lighting rig that tells a story or presents and experience to the audience. Selected designer will be paired up with a sound designer and you will be required to work as a team.
Theme: Underdark – Imagine what the world looks like underground. Who lives there? Is there light? What lurks in the shadows? Show us the world and how light enters this new underworld from the strangest of places.
Final Design due: May 13, 2022
Tech build: May 8 – 12, 2022
Location: Regina only
Note there will be a presentation in Saskatoon (April 29 – May 1) of ‘The Tales of Good and Evil’ from 2021 that was never able to be presented due to Covid-19 restrictions.
Honorarium: $600
Number of applications accepted: Two (1 emerging artist, 1 professional artist). Please note that if there are not enough entries in both categories there will still be a total of two artists selected. Also note that artists based in Regina will have priority. If you are a Saskatoon based artist, you will need to cover your own accommodations in Regina.
SOUND DESIGNER
Design Requirements: Design and program a soundscape that tells a story or presents and experience to the audience.Selected designer will be paired up with a lighting designer and you will be required to work as a team.

There will be an emerging and professional category in each design area.
You will be considered a professional artist if you answered yes to 4 or more of the following:

Do you receive compensation for artistic activity with a record of income?

Have you received public or peer recognition? (i.e. SATAward nomination of recipient)?

Have you had a public presentation of artistic work?

Have you received professional training?
-
Are you a member in a professional organization? (i.e. ADC, SATP, etc.)

Do you hold copyright of artists work or have you ever received royalties or residual payments?
