We are sad to announce the cancellation of the upcoming performances of "Tales of Good & Evil" ; there are too many Covid related safety concerns to go ahead. We don't think we can safely create a show for audiences right now.

Light and Sound Design Challenge - Featuring the work of design teams:

Barrett M. Ross (sound) and Carla Orosz (lighting)
Gilles Zolty (sound) and Byron Hnatuk (lighting)
Lenore Maier (sound) and TBA (lighting)
tBone (sound) and SightLines Design (lighting)

Each design team was challenged to create a 5 - 10 minute live light and sound show based on the theme "Tales of Good & Evil"; in essence their task is to create a story with a beginning, middle, and end that provokes a cathartic response from the audience Designers all use the same basic lighting plot and sound equipment. Each team is provided with one "special" light for their show.

Barrett M. Ross (Sound)

Growing-up in Moose Jaw Saskatchewan, raised by a drummer and audiophile, and taught music at a young age by Roman Churko (father of Producer and Studio owner Kevin Churko and multi-instrumentalist Cory Churko). After playing in several bands in high school attended Recording Arts Canada in Ontario. After graduation, moved to Saskatoon, SK and continued to play in various bands including The Bloodlines (featured on the cover of New York Times), and with his three brothers in Foam Lake (playing Spain’s Primavera Festival), and tour North America, Europe and Asia. While pursuing a life as a musician, Barrett worked as a live sound technician and studio engineer. As a live sound technician, Barrett has worked with artists such as: Chris Cornell,

Arcade Fire, and Buffy Sainte – Marie. In 2009, Barrett formed the live sound and lighting production company, Pure Reinforcement Productions (PR Productions ltd) alongside long-time friend Kevin Niessen. In addition to live sound production, Barrett (alongside his three brothers) own and operate Rec Hall Studios (formerly GhettoBox). As a studio engineer, having two albums be nominated for Junos Contemporary Roots Album of the Year category (Kacy and Clayton Strange Country ’15 and Deep Dark Woods Yarrow ‘17 ).

Byron Hnatuk (Lighting)

Locally grown, SATAward winning lighting designer, Byron received his BFA in Design from the University of Saskatchewan in 2010. Recent works include: lighting design for Reasonable Doubt (Persephone Theatre), the annual Elim Church Christmas Celebration, Pimohtewak (City of Saskatoon Winter City Project, Shakespeare on the Saskatchewan) A Soldier’s War (Strikes Twice Productions), Quick Bright Things (Persephone Theatre), and lighting design for The (Post) Mistress (Gordon Tootoosis Nikaniwin Theatre). Byron is thankful to live and work on Treaty 6 Territory, the traditional lands of the Cree and the Homeland of the Métis.

Carla Orosz (Lighting Designer/Technical Coordinator)

Carla Orosz has been designing Sets and Costumes for theatre full- time since 2006 when she completed a MFA in Theatre Design at the University of Victoria. In years previous Carla worked in technical theatre and design while earning her BFA in Design at the University of Saskatchewan. Carla was recently awarded a SATA for her set design on Penelopiad (Ferre Play Theatre). Carla has worked with the Shakespeare on the Saskatchewan company on multiple shows for the past eighteen years. Her designs for Macbeth earned her a S.A.T. award in Costume Design. Carla has received two previous S.A.T. Awards for her Set & Costume Design on Bite the Hand and her collective work during 2009-2010 and most recently for her set design on Penelopiad (Ferre Play Theatre). Carla is an Associate Professor at the University of Saskatchewan and is the resident Set & Lighting Designer at Greystone Theatre (Drama Department – Usask).

David Granger

David has been working in theatre for two decades now, collaborating with almost all of Saskatoon’s companies. Known primarily as a designer, he has also written and directed. His most notable works include: Gabriel Dumont’s Wild West Show (Co-author and set designer), Ma Irma (Director), Café Daughter (Set Design). David is also an active member of the 300 local of IATSE and enjoys his sessional work and Propmaster’s duties at the University of Saskatchewan’s Drama department.

Gilles Zolty (Sound)

I’m so thrilled to be part of “SK Design Festival” 2021 and to work with such talented folks in Saskatchewan'’s Theatre community!!Gilles is a Saskatoon-based artist whose credits include: Through The Window ( Sum Theatre), WROL, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, Pride and Prejudice, Art, Mary’s Wedding, Hedda Gabler, My Chernobyl, A Man A Fish (Persephone Theatre), The Thin Man (Vertigo Theatre), Merry Wives, Hamlet, Othello, A Midnight Summers Dream (SOS); Exit, Pursued By a Bear, Cinderella, I and You, Around the World in 80 Days, The Secret Mask, The Drowning Girls, The Hounds of The Baskerville (Globe Theatre), Havre, Ma Irma, Et Le Reflet de Notre Lune Dansera, Chambre Blanche (La Troupe Du Jour) Sans Pays (Zone Theatres, Ottawa) Stop Kiss (Embrace Theatre). Gilles received a Saskatoon and Area Theatre Award for Achievement in Sound Design for A Man A Fish. He has scored several films, records, and performs with Zolty Cracker.

Judith Schulz (Lighting)

Judith Schulz (she/her) is a theatre designer and practitioner who has a passion for creating theatre with technology and movement and making stories come to life. Recent credits include: "Playhouse Creatures" (Set, Greystone Theatre), "Rooftops" (Lighting, DSA production), “The Wolves” (Stage Manager, EvilStick/littleBig), “This Is Not That Festival” (Set/Production Manager, 25th Street), “La Vie Apres le Hockey” (Lighting, La Troupe du Jour). She is currently working as an Artistic Associate at Sum theatre. Judith is also a founding member of SightLine Designs. SightLine Designs Inc. is a Saskatchewan based theatre design company with skills and specialties ranging from set and costume design, to lighting, and projection design. We've also had the honour to become leaders in digital theatre design and production during the ongoing pandemic. sightlinedesigns.ca.

Lenore Maier (Sound)

Ursa is the solo electronic audio/video project of Lenore Maier. She produces ambient electronic works that drift between drone and dream, somewhere between sound effect and musical sound. Her debut album “Prism System” navigates fluidly through dream state and hypnagogic consciousness. She harvests and edits found audio/video footage and programs it to be viewed and experienced in tandem with her sonic compositions. She has worked in the realms of live theatre sound design, film scoring and documentary scoring. In 2019, she was nominated for a SATA for Outstanding Sound Design in "S.C.U.M. A Manifesto". Ursa is not for everyone.

tBone (Sound)

tBone is honoured to work alongside this team of amazing talent. tBone is a full-time audio engineer and owner of Sound Lounge by tBone. When he's not on set recording audio for video productions (Masterchef Canada, Supergrid, CBC documentaries, Flat Out Food), or in the studio mixing (Popcorn and Entrepreneurs Docs, STF Teacher Stories), he's creating sound design for theatre (Les Mis, Wizard of Oz, Annie, Short Cuts Festival 2014 – 2020), a voice for tv and radio advertisement or drumming (Fireside Singers, Music for the Gut, It's Too Late Baby, Elly Thorn, Spirit of the Cross). It is an honour to be part of this exciting creative collective!
